Blackjack Strategy Calculator: Hand Decisions and Rule Settings
A blackjack strategy calculator is useful when it answers a specific question: given this hand, this dealer upcard and these table rules, which action does basic strategy call for? The rules matter as much as the cards. Hard 11 against an ace, for example, has a different recommendation in the supported S17 and H17 profiles.
Use the tool below to look up hard totals, soft totals and eligible original pairs. It shows the recommended action and, where relevant, what to do if doubling or surrender is unavailable. It is a learning tool: it does not connect to a casino, place a wager, predict the next card or calculate a guaranteed return.
How to enter the hand correctly
Begin with the hand in front of you, rather than the total you hope to reach. Select the stage, hand category and value, then the dealer’s visible card. Match the rules to the game information before interpreting the result. Changing a rule or hand updates the result; the check button also refreshes it.
1. Identify the stage
Use “original two-card hand” for the initial hand before extra cards. Use “three or more cards” after a hit. The multi-card setting disables original-pair selection and does not recommend doubling or surrender. Restricted split-ace situations are outside this tool.
2. Choose hard, soft or pair
A hard total has no ace counted as 11. A soft total does. An eligible original pair should be entered as a pair, because split strategy can differ from the action for the same combined total.
3. Enter the dealer’s upcard
Use the visible dealer card. The 10 / J / Q / K option groups ten-value cards for main-hand strategy. Do not enter a guessed hole card or use another player’s visible card as the dealer input.
4. Check rules and available actions
Select S17 or H17, DAS or NDAS, and late surrender availability. If the current hand cannot double, select the fallback option. The result applies to the stated profile, not to an unidentified game.
If ace and 6 receive a king, the total becomes hard 17: the ace counts as 1. Change the hand category as well as the stage. Leaving the hand labelled soft 17 after that card would ask the calculator about different cards. The blackjack glossary explains soft totals, upcards and the rule abbreviations.
A natural blackjack in the initial two cards is already a settlement situation, so this decision tool does not offer soft 21 as a playable input. Bust totals are also excluded. Refer to the blackjack rules and payouts guide for natural-blackjack, push and bust outcomes.
The rules behind the recommendations
This is a total-dependent basic-strategy lookup for a conventional multi-deck profile. “Total-dependent” means it uses the category and total rather than analysing every rank already removed from a finite shoe. It does not calculate composition-dependent exceptions, running counts or the exact expected value of each available move.
- Decks: the 4–8 deck strategy profile.
- Natural payout: conventional 3:2 blackjack, without special bonus payouts or dealer-total exceptions.
- Dealer procedure: American-style peek, with dealer blackjack ruled out before the decisions considered here.
- Doubling: on any original two cards when permitted and funded; a separate setting shows the non-double fallback.
- Splitting: an original eligible pair with splitting available; the DAS choice changes the relevant pair decisions.
- Surrender: optional late surrender on the original two-card hand only.
Check the table help panel rather than assuming that “classic” or “standard” means these exact conditions. A single-deck table, a double-deck game, European no-hole-card procedures, unusual doubling restrictions, limited split rules or a special blackjack variant may need a different chart. If the profile does not match, do not treat this output as a verified recommendation for that game.
The decision rules were checked against Michael Shackleford’s 4–8 deck basic-strategy reference at Wizard of Odds. That reference distinguishes S17 and H17 and identifies the relevant surrender and double-after-split changes. The calculator interface and explanations on this page make those assumptions visible alongside each lookup.
What S17 and H17 change
S17 means the dealer stands on soft 17. H17 means the dealer takes another card on a soft 17. These labels describe dealer behaviour, not an instruction that the player must copy. Player soft 17 can require a different action from the dealer’s fixed rule.
Changing the selector affects particular hard, soft and surrender decisions. It does not turn every recommendation into the opposite action. Review the complete result after a change, including any fallback, rather than looking only at the main action word.
What the DAS setting means
DAS allows doubling on eligible hands formed by a split. NDAS does not. That future option changes whether some original pairs are worth splitting. It is distinct from the “can this hand double now?” selector, which controls the immediate double recommendation and its fallback.
The pair input assumes splitting is currently legal and available. It is not intended for a pair created after the maximum number of splits has already been reached, nor for split aces with restricted drawing. Such cases need the game’s specific rules and a suitable reference.
Worked blackjack decisions
These examples use the supported profile and show why the category and settings matter. They demonstrate decisions, not predictions. A recommended move can lose the hand, while an unsuitable move can happen to win once.
Hard 12 against dealer 2
Select hard 12, dealer 2 and no surrender. The lookup says hit. Against dealer 4, it says stand. A general instruction to “stand whenever the dealer looks weak” is too broad to cover both situations.
Hard 11 against dealer ace
With doubling available, S17 gives hit while H17 gives double. If doubling is unavailable, the H17 fallback is hit. This is a useful check that the selected dealer rule is actually being used.
Soft 18 against dealer 6
When doubling is available, the recommendation is double, with stand as the fallback. A soft hand can have a stand fallback even though a different soft total would use hit. Read the full result.
Soft 19 against dealer 6
The H17 profile recommends double if permitted, otherwise stand. The S17 profile stands. Enter soft 19 rather than hard 19: the two categories have different options.
Two eights against dealer 10
Enter the original pair as 8 + 8. The recommendation is split, including when late surrender is selected for this matchup. Entering ordinary hard 16 would produce the wrong question for the eligible pair.
Two eights against dealer ace
Under H17 with late surrender available, surrender takes priority, with split as the fallback. Without that surrender option, the pair recommendation is split. This exception is handled before ordinary hard-total rules.
Two fours against dealer 5
With DAS, the pair recommendation is split. Without DAS, it becomes hit. The immediate total is eight in both cases; the rule affecting hands after the split explains the difference.
A multi-card hard 16 against dealer 10
Select the multi-card stage. The result is hit, even if the surrender selector remains set to available, because this profile does not allow late surrender on that multi-card hand. The stage controls eligibility.
Why the fallback is part of the answer
“Double if allowed” is incomplete unless you know what follows when it is not allowed. Hard 10 against dealer 6 uses hit as the fallback. Soft 18 against dealer 6 uses stand. The calculator displays those alternatives, and the current-hand double selector lets you show the fallback directly.
Late-surrender fallbacks also differ. For H17 hard 17 against an ace, the fallback is stand. For an eligible pair of eights in the H17 ace matchup, it is split. A single universal “if unavailable, hit” message would be incorrect for those cases.
What this calculator cannot tell you
The output is an action lookup rather than a simulation or an exact hand-odds engine. It does not show a win percentage, expected payout, house edge, RTP or the probability of a losing run. Those figures require further assumptions and calculations. A recommended action does not mean the hand is favourable or likely to win.
It also does not observe the shoe, count cards or react to which cards have already been dealt. For multi-card hands it uses the selected total and removes unavailable actions, without making composition-specific refinements. Special variants, restricted split hands and other unsupported rules remain outside its scope.
Insurance and other side bets are not included in the main-hand lookup. Their own payout schedules and qualifying events need separate analysis. Do not interpret a main-hand recommendation as an instruction to place a side bet or as confirmation that a particular side bet is good value.
Hand decisions are separate from stake size
There is no stake input because the tool is not a staking plan. Martingale, Paroli and other betting systems concern how much is wagered on the next round. Basic strategy concerns the action taken with the cards. Increasing a bet after losing does not make a future recommendation more likely to win.
Doubling and splitting do require extra money within a round. A hypothetical ₱100 initial wager can become a ₱200 commitment after an equal-stake double or split, with further exposure possible under the table’s rules. Decide spending boundaries before a round and do not use a tool’s recommendation as a reason to exceed them. See the responsible gambling information for the site’s practical guidance.
Casino bonuses need a separate check
A welcome promotion may exclude blackjack, apply reduced contribution or restrict eligible stakes. The calculator does not adjust for those terms. Its recommendation does not establish that the game qualifies or that an extra stake complies with a promotion’s maximum bet.
Read the bonus guide and the current offer conditions before accepting. Keep the ordinary game rules separate from promotional rules: one explains how the hand is played, while the other can govern which funds and wagers qualify.

Blackjack strategy calculator FAQ
What rules does this blackjack calculator support?
It uses a total-dependent 4–8 deck profile with conventional 3:2 blackjack, American-style dealer peek and doubling on any original two cards. You can choose S17 or H17, double after split and late surrender. It is not a universal tool for every blackjack variant.
Does the calculator predict the next card or a winning hand?
No. It looks up a basic-strategy action for the selected hand and rules. It does not predict cards, calculate a personal return, place bets or guarantee a winning hand or session.
Why does hard 11 against an ace change between S17 and H17?
For the supported profile, the recommendation is hit at S17 and double at H17 when doubling is available. If doubling is unavailable, use the hit fallback. This difference shows why the dealer rule must match the table.
What should I enter for ace and 7?
Choose soft total and soft 18, because the ace currently counts as 11. If a later card forces the ace to count as 1, reclassify the hand using its new hard total and select the multi-card stage.
Should I enter two eights as hard 16?
For an original pair that can be split, choose pair and 8 + 8. Pair strategy takes priority over ordinary hard-total strategy. The supported H17 late-surrender exception against a dealer ace is handled separately.
What if the recommended double is unavailable?
Select that the hand cannot double now. The calculator then shows the hit or stand fallback. When it recommends double, it also displays that fallback. Extra stake availability and the table’s action restrictions both matter.
Does surrender apply to a hand with three or more cards?
Not in this calculator’s profile. Select the multi-card stage to remove surrender and doubling and disable original-pair selection. Its recommendations are total-dependent guidance, not composition-specific analysis.
Can I use this tool for European no-hole-card blackjack?
No. The supported profile assumes American-style dealer peek. No-hole-card procedures and how extra stakes are treated can change strategy. Use a reference designed for the exact variant instead.
Does the tool calculate blackjack odds, RTP or house edge?
No. It provides an action lookup, not an expected-value or probability calculation. RTP and house edge require a complete rule set and defined playing assumptions. The recommendation is not a personal payout forecast.
Does a bonus change the recommendation?
This tool does not incorporate bonus restrictions or wagering contribution. A promotion may exclude blackjack or limit eligible stakes and actions. Verify the individual offer separately; the calculator does not establish bonus eligibility.
