A

Action – A player’s turn to act or general betting activity in a hand.
Aggressive Play – Using bets and raises to pressure opponents.
All-In – Betting all your remaining chips.
Ante – A forced bet placed by all players before a hand begins.

B

Backdoor Draw – A draw that requires hitting the turn and the river to complete.
Bad Beat – Losing a hand despite being a strong favorite.
Bankroll – The total amount of money set aside for poker.
Big Blind (BB) – The larger forced bet posted to start each hand.
Bluff – Betting with a weak or missed hand to get opponents to fold.
Board – The community cards on the table.
Bubble – The last position to finish without winning money in a tournament.

C

Call – Matching the current bet.
Check – Passing the action without betting when allowed.
Check-Raise – Checking first, then raising when an opponent bets.
Community Cards – Shared cards used by all players in Hold’em and Omaha.
Continuation Bet (C-Bet) – Betting the flop after raising pre-flop.
Cutoff – The position to the right of the dealer button.

Dealer Button – A marker showing who is in the dealer position.
Draw – A hand that needs one or more cards to improve, such as a straight draw.
Downswing – A losing streak in poker.
Double-Up – Winning a pot that doubles your chip stack.

Equity – Your share of the pot based on current hand strength and odds.
Expected Value (EV) – A long-term measure of how profitable a decision is.

F

Face Card – Any Jack, Queen, or King.
Flop – The first three community cards in Hold’em or Omaha.
Fold – Surrendering your hand and exiting the pot.
Full House – A combination of three of a kind plus a pair.

G

GTO (Game Theory Optimal) – A balanced poker strategy that is difficult to exploit.
Gutshot – An inside straight draw requiring one specific card.

Hand History – A record of played hands, common in online poker.
Heads-Up – A pot or match involving only two players.
Hijack – The position two seats to the right of the button.

Implied Odds – Future winnings expected if you hit your draw.

Limp – Entering the pot by calling instead of raising.

Nit – A very tight and cautious player.
Nuts – The best possible hand at any moment.

O

Offsuit – Cards of different suits.
Open-Ended Straight Draw – A straight draw that can be completed at both ends.

Pair – Two cards of the same rank.
Position – Your place at the table relative to the dealer.
Pot – The total of all bets made during a hand.

Quads – Four of a kind.

R

Rainbow Flop – A flop with three different suits.
Range – The set of hands a player could realistically have.
River – The fifth and final community card.
Raise – Increasing the size of a bet.

S

Short Stack – A small chip stack compared to other players.
Showdown – Revealing hands after the final betting round.
Slow Play – Playing a strong hand passively to trap opponents.
Side Pot – A secondary pot created when one or more players go all-in.
Small Blind (SB) – The smaller forced bet before cards are dealt.
Straight – Five consecutive cards.
Stack – A player’s total amount of chips.

T

Tilt – Playing emotionally after a bad beat or mistake.
Top Pair – A pair made using the highest card on the board.
Turn – The fourth community card.

U

Under the Gun (UTG) – The first player to act pre-flop, directly left of the big blind.

V

Value Bet – A bet made to win chips from worse hands.
Variance – The natural swings in winnings due to chance.

W

Weak Player – Someone who makes predictable or incorrect decisions.
Wheel – The lowest straight: A-2-3-4-5.
