A slot’s terminology tells you what a symbol does, how the stake is calculated and which rules apply to a return. Some words have two distinct uses: free spins can mean a feature won inside a game or a promotion granted by an operator. Others sound similar while measuring different things, such as RTP, volatility and hit frequency.

Use this searchable glossary to look up terms in a paytable, feature description or bonus condition. The examples explain the vocabulary; the exact game and campaign rules remain the reference for settlement. For a full introduction, read our online slots guide.

Four distinctions to check before a spin

Free spins: feature or promotion?

An in-game feature uses the slot’s own trigger and settlement rules. A promotional offer uses the operator’s campaign terms. An offer’s wagering requirement is not automatically a rule of every free-spins feature.

RTP, volatility and hit frequency

RTP concerns theoretical average return; volatility concerns the distribution of outcomes; hit frequency concerns a defined event’s occurrence. A game can have frequent small awards without frequent profitable rounds.

Line bet or full round cost?

Twenty paylines at ₱0.50 each cost ₱10 if no other charge applies. A 50x line-bet award returns ₱25, while 50x the total bet would be ₱500. The multiplier’s basis matters.

Game cap or promotion cap?

A slot can cap a feature’s award. A promotion can separately cap what becomes withdrawable. A large game payout does not automatically override the terms of the promotional balance used to play it.

Amounts below are illustrative. Always confirm the displayed currency, total stake and relevant game mode. Slots can use different rules even when their themes or feature screens look similar.

A

Active paylines

The lines enabled for evaluation in a payline game. Some slots let you choose them; others fix the line count within a total stake. An attractive combination on an inactive or non-existent line does not qualify just because its symbols look aligned.

Ante bet

An additional or increased stake used by some games for a stated mode or feature arrangement. Check the full round price and the rules it changes. The extra charge is not automatically a separate winning bet or a guarantee of triggering a feature.

Autoplay

A control that repeats rounds under its available settings. It can create many stakes without a fresh tap for each spin. Where offered, check the stake and stopping conditions; automatic repetition does not improve the game’s mathematics.

B

Balance

The amount shown in an account or game wallet. Cash and promotional balances may have different withdrawal conditions. A displayed total can also use a different currency from the one expected, so read its label before choosing a stake.

Bankroll

Money allocated to gambling for a session or period. It should be separate from essential spending. The allocation defines an amount you choose to risk, not how much is mathematically required to make a bonus or jackpot arrive.

Base game

The ordinary playing mode outside a special feature. A slot can have one set of symbols or multipliers in the base game and another during free spins. Read which rules carry over and which reset when the feature ends.

Bet level

A stake setting that can combine with coin value, line count or another game-specific factor. It is not always the amount charged for the whole spin. Check the total bet after changing it.

Bonus balance

Promotional funds recorded separately from withdrawable cash, where the operator uses that structure. Wagering, expiry, eligible games and cashout restrictions can apply. A bonus balance should not be treated as cash merely because it appears in the account total.

Bonus buy

A paid option that directly accesses a specified feature where offered. Its price can be a multiple of the base stake. Check the amount charged, feature rules and promotion restrictions; purchasing access does not guarantee a return above the price.

Bonus game

An extra phase within a slot, such as a pick feature, free-spins round or hold-and-respin event. This is distinct from an operator’s promotional bonus. Its trigger and settlement are defined by the game’s rules.

Bonus wagering

The eligible turnover required by a promotion before its withdrawal conditions are satisfied. A multiplier may apply to the bonus alone or to deposit plus bonus. Those bases produce different required amounts even when the headline multiplier is identical.

C

Capped win

A payout restricted by a stated maximum. A game can cap the return for a round or feature, while a promotion may impose a separate cashout cap. Read the scope of each limit rather than assuming they mean the same thing.

Cascading reels

A mechanism in which qualifying symbols are removed and replacements create another evaluation within the sequence. Several cascades can belong to one paid round. Check whether the screen shows each component win or the accumulated total before adding figures together.

Cashout cap

A promotion’s limit on the amount that can become withdrawable under its terms. It is different from a game’s maximum payout and from the amount displayed as winnings. No-deposit and free-spins offers can have their own caps.

Cluster pays

A format paying connected groups of matching symbols instead of conventional lines. The rules define the minimum group size and permitted connections. A diagonal touch may not count, and different cluster games can use different evaluation rules.

Coin value

The money value assigned to one coin or credit in the game’s stake calculation. If several coins are used across multiple lines, the total stake is larger than one coin’s value. Read the displayed total rather than the denomination alone.

Collect feature

A game mechanic that gathers qualifying symbols, values or prizes under specified conditions. The displayed collection may reset at a defined point or depend on an active feature. Do not assume a visible meter guarantees that another paid spin will complete it.

Configuration

The particular version or settings of a game, which can include its published RTP. Similar artwork and titles do not establish identical mathematics. Use the information inside the exact game instance rather than silently substituting a figure from another version.

Credit

A unit displayed by the game that may represent a stated money value. One credit does not necessarily equal one peso. Practice credits in a demo are also different from cash that can be withdrawn.

D

Demo mode

Practice play using non-withdrawable credits where available. It can teach controls and feature rules. A successful demo session does not predict later results, and its stated configuration should be checked before comparing it with a money version.

Denomination

The value of the unit used to express a stake or credit. It can affect how a displayed number translates into money. Verify the currency and total charge, especially when switching between games or a cash display and a credit display.

E

Expanding wild

A wild that expands over a specified area, such as a reel or part of a grid, when its stated condition is met. Expansion is not always automatic or full-reel. The rules define where it operates and which symbols it can replace.

Expected loss

The mathematical average loss associated with stakes and the relevant theoretical edge. At a hypothetical 96% RTP, ₱1,000 of turnover has a ₱40 expected loss. It is not a bill for one session or a limit on possible losses.

Extra-bet mode

A selectable mode that changes the total spin price or stated feature arrangement. The increased price must be included in turnover. Check whether its published rules or RTP differ; a higher charge does not by itself establish better value.

F

Feature trigger

The condition starting an in-game event, such as a required number of scatter symbols on eligible reels. The exact count and positioning matter. Similar-looking symbols are not interchangeable unless the rules explicitly allow that substitution.

Fixed jackpot

A jackpot prize defined by a fixed amount or formula rather than a growing progressive pool. It can still depend on the stake or selected mode. Check whether the displayed value is cash, credits or a multiple of the bet.

Free spins — in-game feature

Spins granted by the slot under its feature rules, often after a qualifying trigger. The rules define their stake basis, count, multipliers and retriggers. They are part of the game, rather than automatically a separate casino promotion.

Free spins — promotional offer

Spins granted under an operator’s campaign, usually for selected games and a specified spin value. Activation, expiry, wagering and cashout conditions can apply to resulting winnings. The promotion is separate from a free-spins feature triggered inside the game.

G

Gamble feature

An optional game mechanism that risks an awarded amount for another outcome, where offered. The selection and payout rules vary. Winnings put into this feature are at risk; treating them as money already won does not protect them from loss.

Game history

A record of rounds, stakes and settlements, often with identifiers useful for support. Use it when a screen freezes or the final credit is unclear. Reopening a game does not by itself establish that a wager was cancelled.

Game provider

The studio or supplier responsible for a game. It is separate from the operator holding the player’s account. A familiar provider name does not establish a casino’s authorisation, withdrawal performance or access to every game in that provider’s catalogue.

Grid

The arrangement of positions displaying symbols. It can have fixed or changing dimensions. A larger grid does not independently establish better winning probability: symbol distribution, evaluation rules and payouts all matter.

H

Hit frequency

How often a defined event or payout occurs. A published figure may count any credited return, including one below the round’s stake. It is different from the probability of a profitable round and does not describe the game’s full RTP.

Hold-and-respin

A feature that can retain qualifying symbols while giving further evaluation opportunities. Check which positions stay locked, what resets the counter and how the award is calculated. Similar visual features can use different qualifying and settlement rules.

Hot and cold slots

Informal labels for games perceived to have paid frequently or infrequently in a selected sample. They do not establish that a random game is due to pay or stop paying. Recent results are not a reliable prediction of the next independent base-game outcome.

House edge

The theoretical expected loss as a percentage of stakes under the relevant rules. A 96% RTP corresponds to a 4% theoretical edge. It is not the chance of losing a single spin and does not prescribe a short-session result.

I

In-game bonus

A feature built into the slot, such as free spins, a prize pick or a multiplier sequence. It is distinct from a casino’s deposit match or other promotional funds. The word bonus alone does not tell you which rules apply.

J

Jackpot

A prize labelled as a jackpot under the game’s rules. It can be fixed or progressive and is not necessarily identical to the game’s maximum possible payout. Check the qualifying stake, trigger and interaction with any overall win cap.

Jackpot eligibility

The conditions required for a wager to qualify for a jackpot. These can involve a specified stake, additional bet or game mode. A visible jackpot meter does not establish that every available stake is eligible.

Jackpot meter

A display of a jackpot amount or related progress. Check its currency, update behaviour and prize rules. A high displayed total does not reveal the probability of winning it or establish that it will trigger soon.

L

Left-to-right pays

A rule requiring a qualifying sequence to begin from the defined left side and continue through eligible reels. A matching group elsewhere may not count. Some games use other directions or special exceptions, so check the paytable.

Line bet

The stake assigned to one active payline. Twenty lines at ₱0.50 per line cost ₱10 if that is the complete stake formula. A multiplier applied to the line bet can produce a different amount from the same multiplier applied to the total stake.

Locked symbol

A symbol retained for a stated part of a feature or sequence. The lock’s duration and eligible positions are game-specific. A locked symbol is not automatically a separate prize or a guarantee that surrounding positions will form a win.

Low volatility

A description generally associated with a less extreme payout distribution than a higher-volatility design. It does not make losses impossible or promise a fixed hit frequency. Small frequent returns can still be below the total stake.

M

Maximum bet

The largest permitted game stake or a separate maximum under promotion terms. These limits can differ. A game accepting a stake does not establish that a bonus campaign permits it.

Maximum win

The stated upper payout limit for a defined game event, often expressed as a multiple of the total stake. Check whether reaching it ends a feature and whether it includes accumulated awards. It is a ceiling, not a likely outcome.

Megaways

A licensed variable-reel mechanic associated with changing ways to win. The available ways can vary with reel heights in a round. A headline maximum, such as 117,649 in certain titles, is not a universal hit probability or a rule for every implementation.

Minimum bet

The smallest permitted stake for the selected game or mode. It may differ from a promotion’s minimum deposit. Check the full spin cost rather than assuming a small coin denomination is the minimum total charge.

Multiplier

A factor applied to a defined award or stake basis. A 20x line-bet award and a 20x total-bet award can represent different amounts. Check what is multiplied, when it applies and whether it resets between stages.

Mystery prize

An award selected or revealed under a feature’s rules rather than shown as a single fixed value before the event. The label does not establish its probabilities or minimum return. Read the actual award range and qualifying conditions.

N

Near miss

A display that appears close to a qualifying combination but does not meet the rules. It is not a partial entitlement to the missing prize and does not establish that the next spin has a better chance.

Net result

Total credited returns minus the full amount staked for the period being measured. A ₱4 award from a ₱10 round is a ₱6 net loss. A celebratory animation can accompany a return that is smaller than the round’s cost.

No-deposit bonus

A promotion activated without the stated initial deposit requirement. It can still have eligibility, wagering, verification, expiry and withdrawal conditions. No deposit describes activation; it does not automatically mean immediately withdrawable money or unrestricted play.

Nudge

A defined movement of a reel or symbol position under a game feature. It may be automatic or follow specified controls. Do not assume that a nudge creates a win or that a generic reel-stop button provides the same function.

P

Pay both ways

A payout arrangement allowing defined sequences to be evaluated in more than one direction. The minimum count and starting positions still matter. It does not mean every scattered matching symbol qualifies or that identical awards are always paid twice.

Payline

A defined route through symbol positions used to evaluate wins. It can be straight or follow a shaped path. A qualifying arrangement must meet that game’s direction, symbol-count and active-line rules.

Payout

An amount awarded under the game’s settlement rules. A slot display commonly shows a credited award rather than table-game profit odds. Do not add the stake again unless the rules state it is returned separately.

Paytable

The game information showing symbol awards, winning patterns and feature rules. Read the multiplier basis, substitution exceptions and stake settings. It is the primary reference for settling the exact game instance you opened.

Persistent feature

A game state or collection that continues across stated rounds or stages. Its rules can affect the current game state, unlike a claim that ordinary random losses make a payout due. Check resets, eligibility and what happens when leaving the game.

Pick bonus

A feature involving the selection of items on screen under a specified award mechanism. The rules determine whether choices affect the result or reveal an assigned result. A visual choice alone does not establish a skill advantage.

Progressive jackpot

A prize pool that can grow under defined contribution rules before a qualifying trigger. It may be local or shared across a network. Do not assume that every wager in a casino contributes or that every selected stake qualifies.

R

Random number generator

A mechanism used to generate random values for a game’s outcome process. Symbols need not all have equal probabilities. The term identifies a broad mechanism, not proof that a particular operator or game instance is independently certified.

Reels

The columns or reel structures displaying symbols in a slot. Online reels are commonly visual representations of the outcome rather than levers a player controls. Their apparent stopping pattern does not establish that a timing technique improves the result.

Respin

An additional spin or evaluation granted under a feature’s rules. It may hold some symbols or reels in place. Check what is charged, what remains locked and when the sequence ends instead of assuming it is a new ordinary paid round.

Retrigger

A qualifying event that adds or restarts a feature under the rules, such as additional free spins. A feature may limit the number of retriggers or use different conditions from its initial trigger. Read those limits in the help panel.

Return to player

RTP: the theoretical average return as a percentage of wagers over a very large volume of comparable play. A 96% RTP is not a promise to return 96% of a deposit or session. Check the exact configuration and selected mode.

S

Scatter

A special symbol that can pay or trigger a feature without following an ordinary payline, depending on the rules. The required count, eligible reels and interaction with wilds vary. A symbol’s appearance alone does not establish its function.

Session limit

A spending or time boundary chosen for play. It is separate from a slot’s maximum stake or payout cap. Reaching the limit does not create a requirement to keep playing until a feature arrives or an earlier loss is recovered.

Side bet

An additional wager with separately defined eligibility or settlement. Include its cost when reading total exposure. A side bet may have different mathematics from the base game and may be excluded by promotion terms.

Stacked symbols

Symbols arranged together over several positions on a reel. They can help create combinations under the paytable, but a visible stack is not itself always a winning award. Its value depends on the full qualifying arrangement.

Sticky wild

A wild retained for a stated duration or feature condition. It does not necessarily stay for every remaining spin. Check its substitution rules and removal conditions rather than assuming that all wilds stick or behave identically.

Symbol

A game icon evaluated under the paytable. Ordinary paying symbols, wilds, scatters and collection symbols can have different functions. Similar artwork does not establish that two symbols substitute for each other.

T

Theoretical RTP

Another label for the game’s mathematical return-to-player figure. It differs from a measured short-session return. The comparison needs the same configuration, stakes and relevant feature rules, rather than merely a matching title or theme.

Total bet

The complete amount charged for a round, including the applicable line, coin, extra-bet or side-bet components. Confirm this after changing a mode. A selected coin value alone may be only one part of the calculation.

Total return

The combined credited awards for the defined round or period. It can include multiple lines or feature components. Compare it with all stakes to calculate the net result, and avoid counting repeated accumulated displays as separate credits.

Turnover

The sum of wagers placed, including money wagered again after a return. One hundred ₱5 spins create ₱500 turnover even if the initial deposit was smaller. A promotion may count only a specified percentage of eligible turnover.

U

Unfinished round

An accepted game event whose settlement is not yet clear on screen. Check round history or support using its identifier. A connection interruption or closed browser does not by itself establish that the stake was refunded.

Up to

A maximum qualifier, not an amount active or awarded every round. Up to 100 free spins can depend on conditions; up to a stated number of ways can describe a maximum reel configuration. Read what determines the actual amount.

V

Variance

A mathematical measure of the spread of outcomes around their average. Slot discussions often use volatility as a practical description of that spread. Neither term alone tells you the next result, exact hit frequency or full theoretical return.

Video slot

A broad category of slots using video-style graphics and game presentation. It can include lines, ways, clusters and different features. The category does not establish a particular RTP, reel count or volatility.

Volatility

A description of the distribution and fluctuations of game returns. Higher-volatility designs can concentrate more return in less frequent larger awards, while other designs distribute returns differently. It is separate from RTP, and labels are not necessarily comparable across providers.

W

Wagering contribution

The percentage of qualifying stakes counted toward a promotion’s requirement. If ₱100 of eligible stakes contributes at 50%, only ₱50 counts. Game exclusions and maximum-bet rules can matter even when the slot itself accepts the wager.

Ways to win

An evaluation format based on qualifying matches across adjacent reels without following one drawn payline. Direction and minimum-reel rules still apply. The number of potential ways is not the probability that a spin produces a profitable result.

Wild

A symbol commonly substituting for ordinary paying symbols. Scatters, jackpots and other special symbols may be excluded, and only certain reels or features may allow substitution. The game’s rules define what the wild can actually replace.

Win cap

A limit on the accumulated award for a defined round or feature. Reaching it can end the feature under the rules. It is different from an operator’s withdrawal limit or a promotional cashout cap.

Slots glossary FAQs

What is the difference between RTP and volatility?

RTP describes theoretical average return across wagers over a very large volume of play. Volatility describes the distribution and fluctuations of returns. Two slots can have the same RTP while producing different patterns of small awards, losing stretches and occasional larger payouts.

What are the two meanings of free spins?

In-game free spins are part of a slot’s own feature rules. Promotional free spins are granted under an operator’s campaign, with specified games, spin values and possible wagering or withdrawal conditions. They should not be treated as the same arrangement.

Is a line bet the same as the total bet?

No. A line bet is assigned to one payline, while the total bet is the full round charge. For example, 20 lines at ₱0.50 each cost ₱10 if that is the complete stake formula. Extra-bet modes or other components can add further cost.

Does a slot win always mean a profit?

No. Compare the credited return with the full stake. A ₱4 award from a ₱10 round is a ₱6 net loss. A win animation can accompany a return below the amount paid for the round.

Are wilds and scatters the same thing?

No. A wild commonly substitutes for ordinary paying symbols, subject to exclusions. A scatter can pay or trigger an event under separate rules. A wild does not necessarily replace a scatter or count toward its feature trigger.

Do more ways to win mean better odds?

Not by themselves. Ways describe how symbol combinations are evaluated. The symbol probabilities, payout schedule and total stake still matter. A maximum ways figure is not a hit probability or a guarantee of better value.

What is the difference between a game win cap and a cashout cap?

A game win cap restricts the payout for a defined round or feature. A promotional cashout cap limits what can become withdrawable under that offer. They apply at different stages and can have different conditions.

Is turnover the same as my deposit?

No. Turnover is the sum of stakes, including money wagered again after returns. One hundred ₱5 spins create ₱500 turnover even if the original deposit was smaller. A promotion may count only some eligible stakes.

Does a cold slot become due to pay?

A recent run of poor results does not establish that an ordinary random outcome is due. Explicit persistent features or collected game states must be understood through their actual rules, rather than through a general hot-or-cold label.

Does buying a bonus guarantee a winning feature?

No. A bonus buy pays for access to a specified feature where offered. The return can be below the purchase cost. Check the full price, feature rules and any promotion restrictions before treating it as equivalent to an ordinary spin.
