Blackjack Glossary: 60 Terms and Abbreviations Explained
Blackjack uses short words for decisions that can have very different consequences. A push returns a stake; a bust loses it. A soft 17 and a hard 17 show the same total but behave differently when another card arrives. A table offering 6:5 blackjack does not pay the same natural-blackjack profit as one offering 3:2.
This glossary explains 60 terms used in blackjack rules, game controls, strategy discussions and bonus conditions. Numbers and A–C
- 1:1 / even-money payout
- A winning bet earns profit equal to its stake. A hypothetical ₱100 win pays ₱100 profit plus the returned ₱100 stake. This is a payout ratio, not the separate “even money” offer.
- 3:2 blackjack
- A natural-blackjack payout of one and a half times the stake as profit. A hypothetical ₱100 qualifying natural earns ₱150 profit. It does not mean every winning hand pays 3:2.
- 6:5 blackjack
- A natural-blackjack payout of 1.2 times the stake as profit. The same ₱100 qualifying natural earns ₱120 profit, less than at 3:2. Check the table’s other rules too.
- Ace
- A card counted as 1 or 11, choosing the best total without busting. Ace and 6 can be soft 17; after a ten-value card arrives, the ace counts as 1.
- Action
- Depending on context, a player’s turn to choose a move or the amount wagered. “Action required” concerns the decision timer; “total action” may describe turnover rather than a final loss.
- Bankroll
- Money set aside for gambling. It is distinct from a table’s minimum bet and from money needed for ordinary expenses. A larger bankroll does not guarantee a winning session.
- Basic strategy
- A rules-based set of hand decisions using the player’s cards and dealer’s upcard. Its recommendations depend on assumptions such as deck count, soft-17 rules, doubling and surrender availability.
- Betting unit
- A reference amount used to describe stakes. At a hypothetical ₱100 unit, a three-unit opening wager is ₱300. Extra split or double stakes still need to be counted separately.
- Blackjack / natural
- Normally an ace plus a ten-value card in the original two-card hand. A multi-card 21 is not a natural. A two-card 21 after splitting is usually treated differently; check the rules.
- Burn card
- A card removed from play without being used in a player’s hand, according to the dealing procedure. Its presence is a procedural detail, not a signal that a win is due.
- Bust
- A hand total above 21 after using the available ace values. Under conventional rules a player bust loses immediately, even if the dealer later busts as well.
- Card counting
- Tracking dealt cards to estimate the composition of those still available. It is different from a win/loss staking progression. Its relevance depends on dealing and shuffle procedures; it is not a guaranteed-win method.
- Chip
- A physical or on-screen representation of a stake denomination. Selecting a chip may only select its value; check whether a separate confirmation actually places the wager.
- Cut card
- A marker used in some dealing procedures to indicate a stopping or shuffle point. It is not an extra playing card and does not contribute to a hand’s total.
D–H
- DAS — double after split
- A rule allowing eligible split hands to be doubled. NDAS means doubling after a split is not allowed. Other doubling restrictions may still apply even when DAS is permitted.
- Dealer
- The person or game system dealing and settling the round. The dealer follows the table’s drawing rules rather than choosing moves in response to each player’s total.
- Deck
- A standard pack contains 52 cards. Blackjack can use one or several packs, while special variants may alter the composition. The game information should identify the actual version.
- Double down
- Increase the wager as permitted, normally by the original stake, in return for one final card. Eligible totals, timing and availability after a split depend on the table rules.
- Early surrender
- A surrender option exercised before the dealer’s blackjack check, where permitted. It normally gives up half the initial wager. Do not assume a surrender button means this version is available.
- ENHC — European no-hole-card
- A procedure in which the dealer does not take a concealed second card at the initial deal. Read how a later dealer blackjack affects original, double and split stakes.
- Even money offer
- An offer sometimes made when the player has a natural and the dealer shows an ace. It settles the hand for 1:1 profit. Availability and details depend on the game.
- Face card
- A jack, queen or king, each worth 10 in the main hand. A numbered 10 has the same main-hand value but is not a picture or face card.
- Flat betting
- Keeping the same opening wager from round to round. A permitted split or double can still add exposure within a round, so “flat” does not always mean one stake at risk.
- Hard hand
- A hand with no ace currently counted as 11. It may still contain an ace valued at 1. Ace, 6 and king total hard 17.
- Hit
- Ask for another card. A hit can improve the total, change a soft hand into a hard hand, or bust it. It does not normally require an additional main wager.
- H17 — hit soft 17
- The dealer draws on a soft 17, such as ace and 6. This does not mean the dealer hits every hard 17. Compare it with S17 in the rules.
- Hole card
- A concealed dealer card in versions using that procedure. It differs from the upcard visible to players. Some versions do not deal the dealer’s second card until later.
- House edge
- The theoretical advantage to the house under stated rules and playing assumptions, expressed relative to a defined stake basis. It is not a fee taken visibly from every hand or a personal loss forecast.
I–P
- Insurance
- A separate side bet commonly offered against a dealer ace. It usually costs up to half the main stake and pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack. It does not guarantee the main hand wins.
- Late surrender
- A surrender option whose availability is conditional on the dealer not having blackjack. Timing and how that condition is checked depend on the dealing procedure. It is not interchangeable with early surrender.
- Live blackjack
- A game streamed from a table with a live dealer and digital betting controls. Decisions may have timers. Players normally compete against the dealer, rather than against each other.
- Main bet
- The wager on the blackjack hand itself, separate from insurance and other side bets. Keep the main-hand settlement separate when checking a round’s overall profit or loss.
- Martingale
- A staking progression that usually doubles the next opening wager after a loss and resets after a win. It changes exposure, not the next hand’s probabilities, and can reach table or budget limits.
- Multi-deck
- A game using more than one deck. The number of packs is one part of a rule set; it does not by itself identify the natural payout or split permissions.
- Pair
- Two opening cards eligible for consideration as a split under the game’s rules. Some tables allow any two ten-value cards to split; others impose restrictions. Equal point value is not always enough.
- Pat hand
- Informal language for a hand generally kept without taking another card, often a hard 17 or higher. It is descriptive shorthand, not a complete strategy rule for every variant.
- Paytable
- The displayed schedule of payouts and qualifying outcomes. Read whether a ratio represents profit and whether it applies to the main hand, a natural or a separate side bet.
- Peek
- A procedure checking the dealer’s concealed card for blackjack when the upcard qualifies. It does not reveal the card to players. No-hole-card games follow a different sequence.
- Penetration
- The portion of a shoe dealt before a shuffle. It concerns the dealing procedure, not an RTP promise. The relevance of previously dealt cards depends on how the game handles its decks.
- Push
- A qualifying tie that normally returns the original stake with no profit. An ordinary 21 and a natural do not necessarily tie, and some variants change conventional settlement rules.
R–S
- Resplit
- Split again after a split hand receives another eligible pair. The maximum number of hands and permission to resplit aces depend on the table; an initial split does not imply unlimited resplitting.
- RNG blackjack
- Software blackjack using a random-number generator as part of its dealing process. Check the game rules for deck and shuffle assumptions. A digital table does not automatically imply a persistent physical-style shoe.
- RTP — return to player
- Theoretical long-run return under specified rules and playing assumptions. It is not a promise for an individual session and should not be treated as one universal percentage for all blackjack games.
- Running count
- The cumulative tally in a card-counting method as cards are observed. Its meaning depends on the chosen system. A positive number alone is not a guaranteed winning signal.
- S17 — stand on soft 17
- The dealer stands on soft 17 as well as hard 17. Contrast this with H17, where the dealer takes another card on a soft 17.
- Session limit
- A pre-set spending or time boundary for a period of play. A limit is a stopping tool, not a method for changing probabilities or forcing a profitable finish.
- Shoe
- A device or game representation holding cards to be dealt, commonly from several decks. A shoe label alone does not tell you when shuffling happens or how a digital version works.
- Shuffle
- Reordering cards for subsequent dealing. A manual shuffle, an automatic batch shuffle and continuous shuffling are different procedures. Read the game information rather than inferring the process from an animation.
- Side bet
- An optional wager on a separate outcome, such as a qualifying card combination. It has its own payout and conditions, and can lose even when the main blackjack hand wins.
- Soft hand
- A hand with an ace currently valued at 11 without exceeding 21. Ace and 6 make soft 17. A later card may reduce the ace to 1 and make the hand hard.
- Split
- Separate an eligible pair into two hands, normally adding a stake equal to the original wager. Restrictions can apply to further cards, doubling, resplitting and the treatment of split aces.
- Stand
- Keep the current total and take no further cards on that hand. Standing completes that decision; it does not declare a win or prevent the dealer from making a better hand.
- Surrender
- Where allowed, end a hand by giving up half the relevant initial wager. Early and late surrender have different conditions. The option may be unavailable at a particular table.
T–W
- Table limits
- The permitted minimum and maximum wagers, with possible separate limits for side bets. These constraints can stop a staking progression even if the account balance could cover its next requested bet.
- Ten-value card
- A 10, jack, queen or king. All count as 10 in the main hand, although their ranks or suits can matter to a side bet or a variant’s special rules.
- True count
- In some counting systems, a running count adjusted for the estimated decks remaining. The calculation and interpretation depend on the method. It is distinct from the hand’s card total.
- Turnover
- The sum of wagers placed over a period, including money reused after returns. It can exceed the original deposit and is different from net profit, loss or available balance.
- Upcard
- The dealer’s visible card, used alongside the player’s hand and table rules when choosing an action. The same player total can call for different decisions against different upcards.
- Wagering contribution
- The proportion of an eligible bet counted toward a bonus requirement. At a hypothetical 10% contribution, a ₱100 bet adds ₱10 toward the target; excluded games may count nothing.
- Wagering requirement
- The promotion’s required eligible turnover before specified funds can be withdrawn. Check the calculation basis, game exclusions, contribution, maximum bet and expiry. Completing it does not guarantee a profit.
Blackjack words that are easy to confuse
Natural vs an ordinary 21
Ace and king in the initial hand normally make a natural. Seven, seven and seven total 21 without being a natural. Both totals are 21, but they do not automatically receive the same payout or tie under the same conditions.
Soft vs hard
Ace and 6 make soft 17 because the ace is counted as 11. Add a king and the ace becomes 1: the hand is now hard 17. “Hard” does not mean there was never an ace.
Main-hand result vs round result
You can push the main hand and lose a side bet. Split hands can win and lose separately. To understand the balance change, add all stakes and all returns rather than looking at a single “win” message.
Starting stake vs total exposure
A ₱100 starting wager can become a ₱200 commitment after a permitted equal-stake double or split. Further actions may add more. The original chip does not necessarily describe the full amount at risk.
Payout profit is different from the total returned
On a hypothetical ₱100 ordinary win at 1:1, profit is ₱100 and the total returned is ₱200 including the original stake. A qualifying natural at 3:2 earns ₱150 profit, returning ₱250 in total; at 6:5 it earns ₱120 profit, returning ₱220. These examples explain the ratios and do not imply that an operator supports peso accounts or those precise stakes.
Insurance’s usual 2:1 figure applies to the separate insurance stake. It does not mean that the main hand has become a 2:1 wager. Likewise, a side-bet paytable can contain large ratios that have no effect on the main hand’s settlement.
A staking sequence is not a hand-decision chart
Flat betting, Martingale and other progressions concern the size of a starting wager. Basic strategy concerns the action taken with particular cards under particular rules. A stake pattern does not tell you whether to split a pair or hit a soft hand. The betting systems guide shows that distinction with worked stake examples.
Card-counting terminology is included so readers can understand discussions of shoes and shuffling. Those terms are not a claim that a particular online game offers useful persistent card information. Read its dealing procedure before applying assumptions drawn from a different game format.
Use the glossary when reading a game’s help panel
Start with the natural payout and dealer soft-17 rule. Then look for doubling restrictions, DAS or NDAS, split-ace treatment, resplitting and surrender. Check the dealer’s blackjack procedure and what happens to extra stakes when it matters. The same game title or similar graphics do not establish identical rules.
If the interface uses unfamiliar abbreviations, open the full rules rather than guessing from a short label. An unavailable button can reflect the rules or the current stage of the hand. In live play, note the decision timer and avoid repeated taps if a response is delayed. Keep a round reference if you need to ask the operator about settlement.
For a conventional introduction, see Bicycle’s blackjack explanation. MGM’s GameSense guide also explains common actions and table-rule variations. These are reference examples, not confirmation of the rules or availability of any casino linked on this website.
Bonus language needs its own rules check
“Wagering” can describe all stakes placed, while a bonus’s eligible wagering may count only part of them. A hypothetical ₱100 wager at 10% contribution adds ₱10 toward the target. An excluded blackjack table can contribute nothing. Read the relevant bonus conditions rather than assuming that an ordinary casino wager qualifies.
A welcome offer or no-deposit promotion may be for specified slots rather than blackjack. Check maximum bets, expiry, the calculation basis and withdrawal restrictions. Bonus credit and withdrawable cash are different balances, even if both appear in the same account.

Blackjack terminology FAQ
What is the difference between blackjack and 21?
A natural blackjack normally means an ace and a ten-value card in the original two-card hand. A total of 21 made with three or more cards is an ordinary 21. A two-card 21 after splitting is usually treated as ordinary 21; check the table rules.
Can a hard hand contain an ace?
Yes. A hard hand has no ace currently counted as 11, but it can contain an ace valued at 1. Ace, 6 and a king make hard 17.
What do H17 and S17 mean?
H17 means the dealer hits a soft 17, such as ace and 6. S17 means the dealer stands on soft 17. These abbreviations describe a dealer rule, not a recommendation for how the player should act.
Is a push a win?
No. A conventional main-hand push returns the stake without profit. It is a tie under the applicable rules. Side bets are settled separately, so the overall round can still have a different net result.
Are even money and insurance the same thing?
They are related but describe different offers. Insurance is a separate bet against dealer blackjack. An even money offer can settle a player natural for 1:1 profit against a dealer ace. Check the actual game’s conditions and availability.
What is the difference between a face card and a ten-value card?
Face cards are jacks, queens and kings. Ten-value cards include those cards and numbered 10s. They share the same main-hand value, but ranks and suits can matter to separate bets or special rules.
Does double after split mean I can double every split hand?
Not necessarily. DAS allows doubling on eligible split hands, but other rules can restrict which totals or hands qualify. Split aces can have separate restrictions. Read the complete table rules.
Does a 3:2 payout include my original stake?
The ratio normally describes profit. A hypothetical ₱100 qualifying winning natural at 3:2 earns ₱150 profit, with the ₱100 stake returned separately for ₱250 in total. A push or dealer blackjack can change settlement.
Is card counting a betting system like Martingale?
No. Card counting tracks information about dealt cards and remaining composition. Martingale changes stakes according to losses and wins. Their concepts differ, and neither label establishes that a particular online game can be beaten.
Does blackjack always count toward bonus wagering?
No. Promotions can exclude blackjack, apply reduced contribution or restrict specific tables and bets. Read the eligible games, contribution percentage, maximum stake, expiry and withdrawal conditions for the individual offer.
